A few years back, there was a proposal to build a cell tower within our locality, right in the middle of a densely populated residential area. The people were angry about this because they weren’t even consulted. It was already approved by the concerned government agencies and so the construction started. But with the constant clamor of the residents against its presence, the construction was stopped. Questions regarding the hazard the cell tower will cause to the people living nearby was the main concern. So is there really any health risks with the installation of a cellular tower near or in a community?
The answer posted in Health Physics Society assures us that:
“Cellular Tower Safety Cellular phone technology, including personal communications systems (PCS), is designed to be safe for both users and people living near base-station antennas.“ Furthermore, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) sets safety standards for human exposure to radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic energy in the United States.
For as long as telecommunications companies comply with the standards and regulations of the governing agencies, then I guess there’s really no reason to worry about.

1Scientific researches have now proved beyond ay doubt that emissions from the mobile base stations are much lower than those prescribed by ICNIRP and are 18 millionth of the exposures prescribed. The emission levels are as low as emitted by a radio or Television.
The myth is no more alive concerning radiofrequency fields, the balance of evidence to date suggests that exposure to low level RF fields (such as those emitted by mobile phones and their base stations) does not cause adverse health effects.
Several recent epidemiological studies of mobile phone users found no convincing evidence of increased brain cancer risk. RF exposure is far higher for mobile phone users than for those living near cellular base stations. Apart from infrequent signals used to maintain links with nearby base stations, handsets transmit RF energy only while a call is being made. However, base stations are continuously transmitting signals, although the levels to which the public are exposed are extremely small, even if they live nearby.
In view of the widespread growth and evolution of the technology, the degree of scientific uncertainty and exposure as well as the level of public apprehension, there is a clear and emergent need of not only scientific studies but its clear communication with the public as well.
